About Excelsior

Excelsior was started in 1853 by settlers from upstate New York, the first settlement of newcomers on Lake Minnetonka. In the late 1800s it was a summer resort town, and streetcars and steamboats brought visitors from Minneapolis. From 1925 to 1973 the Excelsior Amusement Park on the lakeshore drew crowds with its roller coaster, carousel and dance hall. Today the town of about 2,400 people keeps its old Water Street shops, which are on the National Register of Historic Places, along with many Victorian houses. People come to stroll downtown, picnic on the Commons, ride a restored streetcar, and take boats out on the lake.
