About Shorewood

Shorewood sits on the south shore of Lake Minnetonka and was made its own city in 1956, cut out of Excelsior Township so neighbors could not annex it. Long before that, farmer Peter Gideon came to the lake in 1853 and spent years trying to grow apples that could live through Minnesota winters. In 1868 he picked out a hardy one and named it Wealthy for his wife, and his farmhouse on Glen Road still stands. Today Highway 7 is the main road, the city's lake islands include Spray and Shady, and its children go to Minnetonka public schools.
