About Minnetonka
Minnetonka grew from a sawmill built on Minnehaha Creek in 1852, the first settlement west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. The land and the big lake beside it were sacred to the Dakota long before that. Mills made furniture and then flour until the 1880s, and a streetcar line brought visitors to the lake's hotels from 1906. After World War II farms turned into neighborhoods, and the city was formed in 1968. Today it has about 50 parks, over 100 miles of trails, and a restored 1883 house you can tour in summer.
