About Orono
Orono was part of Excelsior Township and then Medina Township before neighbors won permission to form their own town in 1889. It was named for Orono, Maine, the hometown of early resident George A. Brackett. Orono became a city in 1955 and has a lot of water, with Lake Classen and its park among the favorites. Today people walk the trails at Lurton Park, visit the old Noerenberg estate barn, and head to concerts and plays at Orono High School.
