About Grantsburg
Grantsburg got its start in the winter of 1852, when Canute Anderson settled near the St. Croix River and later built a mill, a hotel and a store. The state made it the seat of Burnett County and named it for General Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Vicksburg, and a railroad line from Rush City, Minnesota, arrived in 1884 to a big celebration. A wooden statue of Big Gust, the seven-and-a-half-foot village marshal and lamplighter, stands in front of the Community Center. Today families picnic and watch Canada geese at Memory Lake Park on the Wood River, hike and ski at nearby Crex Meadows, and visit the historical society's church museum, blacksmith's house and 1870 jail on summer Sundays.
