About St. Croix Falls
St. Croix Falls sits on the St. Croix River, across from its sister town of Taylors Falls, Minnesota, at the farthest point steamboats could travel up the river. Logging built the town: pine logs went down the river, and in 1886 a famous log jam piled up for miles in the rocky gorge called the Dalles. Leaders on both sides of the river worked together to save the gorge as the nation's first interstate park, where people still hike past basalt cliffs and deep glacial potholes, and in 1907 a concrete dam tamed the old falls to make power for Minneapolis. Today it calls itself the City of Trails, with the western end of the Ice Age Trail, shows at the Festival Theatre in the 1917 auditorium, a Saturday farmers market on the library plaza, and Wannigan Days each July.
