About Grand Marais
Grand Marais sits on a sheltered harbor on Lake Superior's North Shore, and it is the only city in Cook County. The Ojibwe lived here first; later, French Canadian fur traders called the spot 'great marsh' for a small marsh at the head of the bay. A light has marked the harbor as a safe place for boats since 1884, and the old keeper's house from 1896 is now the county's history museum. Today it is a town of artists and makers, home to the Grand Marais Art Colony and the North House Folk School, and the place where the Gunflint Trail starts north into the Boundary Waters. Each August neighbors still gather for Fisherman's Picnic, with fried herring sandwiches and fireworks over the harbor.
