About Hinckley
The Ojibwe name for Hinckley means the place with plenty of grindstones, for the Grindstone River that runs through town. The railroad came in 1869 into thick white pine forest, and Hinckley grew as a logging and railroad town halfway between the Twin Cities and Duluth. After a great forest fire in 1894, the town rebuilt, cleared the land for farms of potatoes, vegetables and dairy cows, and put up a new depot in 1895 that is now the Hinckley Fire Museum. Today travelers stop on Interstate 35, and each July the Corn and Clover Carnival brings rides and one of the state's largest small-town parades.
