About Union Park

Union Park joins several older St. Paul neighborhoods, including Merriam Park, Lexington-Hamline, Snelling-Hamline and Desnoyer Park, between University Avenue and Summit Avenue. Merriam Park, named for real estate investor John L. Merriam, was one of the city's first streetcar suburbs, growing around a railroad depot, and streetcars on Marshall, Selby and Snelling avenues filled in the blocks around St. Mark's Church. The district's name comes from Union Park, an 1880 lakeside amusement park with a dance hall, carousel and observation tower; it closed by 1884, and only Iris Park's small pond remains. Today the Green Line stops along University Avenue, the A Line runs up Snelling, and the Mississippi River Boulevard trails line the west edge.
