About Macalester-Groveland

Macalester-Groveland lies between Summit Avenue and Randolph Avenue, from the Mississippi River east to Ayd Mill Road. Macalester College moved to what were then St. Paul's western edges in the 1880s, and the neighborhood filled in as streetcars arrived in the 1890s and again in the 1920s, with shops clustered at the old streetcar corners. One corner of it, Tangletown, is known for curving streets that break the city's grid; lots there were first meant to pay for the college. Today Grand Avenue and Snelling Avenue are lined with restaurants and coffee shops, the A Line stops at Grand, St. Clair and Randolph, and cartoonist Charles Schulz is among those who grew up here.
