About Highland Park

Highland Park fills St. Paul's southwest corner along the Mississippi River, across from Fort Snelling. Its land was once part of the Fort Snelling reserve; it opened for sale in the 1850s and joined St. Paul in 1887, but much of it stayed farmland until Ford opened its Twin Cities Assembly Plant here in 1925. The Intercity Bridge carried workers across the river from 1927, and that same year work began on the Highland Park Water Tower, on the highest ground in the city. Today the old Ford site is the new Highland Bridge area with Gateway Park, Highland Village is the shopping heart, and Hidden Falls and Crosby Farm parks follow the river.
