About Nokomis

Nokomis is the part of south Minneapolis around Lake Nokomis, a community of eleven smaller neighborhoods. An army captain named the lake Lake Amelia in 1819, after his daughter, and in 1910 it was renamed for Nokomis, the grandmother of Hiawatha in Longfellow's poem. When the Park Board bought it in 1907 it was a shallow marsh only five feet deep, so it was dredged into a real lake, and by 1924 its beach drew more swimmers than any other in the city. Today walking and biking trails almost three miles long circle the lake, people fish, sail and paddle canoes in summer, and every winter the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships are played on its ice. Nokomis Library, built in 1968 and redone in Minnesota limestone in 2011, sits a few blocks east of the shore.
