About Hudson

Hudson began in 1840, when Louis Massey and Peter Bouchea settled where the Willow River meets the St. Croix, and the town was first called Willow River and then Buena Vista. In 1852 Alfred D. Gray, the first mayor, renamed it Hudson because the river bluffs reminded him of the Hudson River in New York. Lumber and then the Omaha Road railroad, which had its shops here, helped it grow, and today it is the county seat of St. Croix County, where the first Little Free Library went up in 2009. Families walk out on the Dike, the old toll-bridge causeway, play in Lakefront Park, catch a show at the Phipps Center for the Arts, and bundle up each February to watch balloons rise at the Hot Air Affair.
