About International Falls

The village was platted in 1895 as Koochiching, a word for the place of inlets, where Rainy Lake flows into the Rainy River. It was renamed International Falls in 1903 because the river is the border with Canada. Power from a dam on the river fed the paper mill, which is still the biggest employer. Now the town is known as the Icebox of the Nation, with Icebox Days each January, Smokey Bear Park, and Voyageurs National Park next door.
