About Long Lake
Settlers from Pennsylvania made the first lasting home here in May 1855, a small place called Cumberland Town with a sawmill, a store and a schoolhouse, at the east end of the lake that gave the town its name. The railroad reached Long Lake in 1868, and around 1900 the town was known for its strawberries and raspberries, shipped by rail as far as North Dakota. The library has served the town since 1913, and the Western Hennepin County Pioneer Association keeps its pioneer museum here. Today Long Lake is a small shopping hub for the lake towns around it, and the Orono schools' campus on Old Crystal Bay Road, home of the Spartans, fills the year with concerts and plays.
