About Maple Plain
Maple Plain takes its name from the many sugar maples that grew in its woods. Settlers began arriving in the 1850s around Lake Independence and Pioneer Creek, and the railroad came through in 1868 and 1869, the same years the village plat was laid out. The town's first library opened in 1922 in a former post office, and that old building now stands restored as the Maple Plain Historical Library and Museum. Today neighbors walk the trails of Baker Park Reserve at the edge of town, bring kids to storytime at the library on Main Street, and gather for the Orono Rotary's Party in the Park each June.
