About Schofield

Schofield sits on the east shore of Lake Wausau, a wide part of the Wisconsin River, right where the Eau Claire River flows in, just south of Wausau. It grew up around a sawmill that Dr. William Scholfield ran on the river in the mid-1800s, and the town later dropped the extra 'l' from his name. One of its landmarks is the Brooks and Ross Dam, where two boat landings let people put in canoes and kayaks and fish for walleye, musky and panfish. Today it is a quiet riverside city of about 2,200 people, with shops and restaurants along Grand Avenue and Schofield Avenue, a 1923 brick schoolhouse on the National Register, and kids who go to the D.C. Everest schools.
