About Rothschild
Rothschild grew up around a paper mill: in 1909 a group of Wausau lumbermen started Marathon Paper Mills on the Wisconsin River, and the first roll of paper came off its machine in November 1910. The company built homes, a store and a hall for its workers, and in 1917 voters chose to make the mill town a village of its own. Its best-known building is the Rothschild Pavilion, rebuilt in 1911 after the first trolley-park hall burned, with a maple dance floor that rests on railcar springs and gives dancers a gentle bounce. Today families walk or bike the Cedar Creek Trail along the river and across its covered bridges, explore the wooded trails and big dog park at Gaska Park, and stop at the library branch in the village hall.
