About Mosinee
Mosinee grew up beside the Wisconsin River after John L. Moore built the area's first sawmill in 1836, when the place was called Little Bull Falls. Lumber drew workers and shops, and in 1857 the town was renamed for an Ojibwe chief of the Wisconsin River band. Joseph Dessert, a lumberman from Quebec, ran the sawmill for about forty years and paid for the town's library, which still stands on Main Street. When the pine ran out in the early 1900s, a paper mill took the sawmill's place, and today families still fill the old library for story time, bingo and cribbage.
