About Rib Mountain
Rib Mountain takes its name from the long quartzite hill on its west side, one of the oldest rock formations on earth and the fourth-highest point in Wisconsin. The Ojibwe used the ridge as a lookout, and from 1893 quarrymen cut its rock for sandpaper. The area became the town of Erickson in 1905, took the name Rib Mountain in 1930, and voted in 2023 to become a village. Rib Mountain State Park covers the hill, with hiking trails, an observation tower and views over Wausau and the Wisconsin River, and Granite Peak brings skiers to the north face every winter.
