About Merton
Merton's story starts in 1840, when William and Harriet O'Dell built the first log cabin where the Immigrant Trail crossed an Indian trail on the south side of the Bark River. Earlier, a Potawatomi or Chippewa camp stood on a hill above the river, and a state historical marker now shows the spot. Today the Bark River makes a 34-acre mill pond in the middle of the village, a good place to fish and to watch more than 136 kinds of birds. Families walk or bike the Bugline Trail, play ball at Pollworth and Firemen's parks, and meet their neighbors at the Memorial Day parade and the village-wide rummage sale.
