About Milton
Joseph Goodrich came from Alfred, New York, in 1838 and settled at the crossing of two early roads, where he started a Seventh Day Baptist church and, in 1844, a school that grew into Milton College. In 1845 he built the Milton House, a six-sided inn with walls of poured grout, and a tunnel to a cabin behind it is linked to the Underground Railroad. Today the Milton House is a museum, and the city has many more grout buildings from those early years. The villages of Milton and Milton Junction voted to join as one city in 1967, and neighbors now gather for Merry Milton Weekend in December and the chamber's pork picnic and makers market in North Goodrich Square each August.
