About Muscoda

Muscoda sits on the Lower Wisconsin River, and long before it was a village, early visitors found the sandy prairie here covered with ancient Native American mounds. English fur traders opened a post on the prairie in the 1760s, and the place was called English Prairie until about 1840; the name Muscoda is said to mean "Prairie of Flowers" and may come from an Ojibwe word for prairie. The village was incorporated in 1894, and when the railroad came its main street turned from along the river to the north-south line it follows today. Since 1982 Muscoda has called itself Wisconsin's Morel Capital, and every May, the weekend after Mother's Day, the Morel Mushroom Festival brings a tractor pull, a car cruise-in and family fun, while the riverbank campground, the pool and thousands of acres of public land keep people outdoors the rest of the year.
