About Near North
Near North sits just northwest of downtown Minneapolis, between West Broadway and Olson Memorial Highway. In the early 1900s it was the heart of the city's Jewish community, with kosher markets, bakeries and synagogues along Sixth Avenue North and Plymouth Avenue, and since then it has been a center of Black life and business in Minnesota. Sumner Library opened here in 1912 and moved into its Tudor-style Carnegie building in 1915; it once held the library's whole collection of Yiddish and Hebrew books, and later served Black, Southeast Asian and East African neighbors. Nearby, the old North Branch Library of 1893 was said to be the first branch in the nation where readers could browse open shelves. Today the Minneapolis African American Heritage Museum and Gallery, opened in 2018 at Penn and Plymouth, shares the area's history.
