About Nicollet
Nicollet is a small farm town in Nicollet County. It takes its name from Joseph Nicollet, the French mapmaker who charted the upper Mississippi basin in the 1830s; a post office by that name opened here in 1858, and the town was laid out along the railroad in 1874. Early postcards show a busy Pine Street business district, a creamery that farmers started in 1896, and church steeples above the rooftops. Close by lies Swan Lake, a big shallow lake where trumpeter swans nest and ducks breed, and today families come to Nicollet Public School, the Raiders' PreK-12 school on Pine Street.
