About North Hudson
North Hudson sits on the St. Croix River just north of Hudson, beside Lake Mallalieu, a lake made by damming the Willow River. In 1872 the West Wisconsin Railroad moved its car shops here, and after fires the Omaha Road rebuilt them in red brick in 1890 and 1891, building its own rail cars. The shops were the village's big employer for almost eighty years, until they closed in 1957, and the brick buildings still stand as a historic district. Every August the village throws Pepper Fest, an Italian-themed party started in 1954 to raise money for North Hudson Elementary, with a parade, a carnival, homemade Italian food and pepper-eating contests.
