About Olivia
Olivia began as a small prairie stop on the railroad and was laid out in 1878. The town is named for Olive, an early railroad station agent, and it became a village in 1881. After a long contest with other towns, Olivia became the Renville County seat in 1900. Today it calls itself the Corn Capital of the World, with seed research farms around town and a 50-foot ear of corn monument. Each July, Corn Capital Days brings a sweet corn feed, a grand parade and fireworks to the town of about 2,300 people on U.S. Highway 212, the old Yellowstone Trail.
