About Racine
Racine sits where the Root River meets Lake Michigan; its name is the French word for root. Captain Gilbert Knapp started a settlement here in 1834, and settlers from New England and New York soon filled it, making it a village in 1841 and a city in 1848. Racine became a factory town, where people invented malted milk and the garbage disposal, and where Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Johnson Wax buildings. It also has the largest Danish community in North America, which is why it is famous for kringle pastry. Today people enjoy the lakefront and marina, the zoo, free summer concerts on Monument Square, and the Racine Art Museum downtown.
