About Rice

Rice grew up on the sandy prairie east of the Mississippi River, where the first settlers of European descent arrived in 1844 on land that had been Ojibwe territory. The town is named for George T. Rice, a hotel and mill owner from Massachusetts who came to the area in 1864, and it grew after the Northern Pacific Railroad came through in 1877. It became a village in 1890, and it has been a Tree City USA since 1993, with stands of red pine around town. Today people camp, fish and go boating at Benton Beach on Little Rock Lake, play disc golf, and turn out for the summer Fun Day with its kiddie parade.
