About Rochester

George and Henrietta Head built a log cabin tavern here in 1854 and named the place for their old home, Rochester, New York. It grew as a stagecoach stop, and the railroad arrived in 1864. Dr. William Mayo came in 1863, and after a tornado in 1883 he and his two sons helped start a hospital with the Sisters of St. Francis. That work grew into Mayo Clinic, and today Rochester is Minnesota's third-largest city, set on the bluffs along the south fork of the Zumbro River.
