About Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay takes its name from the bay where it sits; the Menominee name for the place means 'bay of the sturgeon'. The settlement was first recorded as Graham in 1855, took the bay's name after an 1860 petition, became a village in 1874 and a city in 1883, and in those years a canal was dug across the Door Peninsula so ships could pass from the bay to Lake Michigan. Shipyards grew along the water, and the steel Michigan Street Bridge, which lifts to let boats through, opened in 1931. Today families climb the ten-story lighthouse tower at the Door County Maritime Museum, watch the old bridge rise, and gather downtown for the tree lighting and the Christmas by the Bay Parade.
