About Tonka Bay
Tonka Bay sits on a neck of land on Lake Minnetonka, right where the upper and lower lakes meet. In the 1860s the fruit grower Peter Gideon claimed land here, and after years of failed trees he grew the Wealthy apple, named for his wife, which could live through Minnesota winters. By the 1880s the shore drew summer visitors to the big Lake Park Hotel, later called the Tonka Bay Hotel, with its docks, steamboats and a lakeside casino. The village became its own town in 1901, and the old schoolhouse later became its village hall. Today it is a quiet lake town of about 1,400 people, with a city marina and small parks on the water.
