About Waverly
Waverly began in 1856 as Waverly Mills, when a surveyor and his partners built a dam, a sawmill and a grist mill where Little Waverly Lake drains out, in what was then the Big Woods. When the railroad came in 1868 a new village, Waverly Station, grew up beside it, and by the early 1900s it was a busy farm town with mills, grain elevators, hotels and a creamery. Its Moderne Village Hall was built by the WPA in 1939-40 and has hosted dances, weddings, plays and concerts ever since. Hubert Humphrey built a lakefront home here in 1958, and the town's elementary school carries his name; today new neighborhoods line the lakes about 40 minutes from the Twin Cities.
